Shui characters were born out of the need of religious activities. Up to now, the existence and use of Shui characters are still so. People use Shui characters mainly for divination, not communication. The Shui characters are based on the Shui calendar. Today, the marriage and funeral of the local people is still decided according to the "Shui calendar" written by the Shui characters.
