I immediately thought of a communication concept "magic bullet theory". The audience is like a fixed target in a shooting range, while mass media is like a gun. It can transfer "a variety of thoughts, feelings or knowledge almost imperceptibly to the audience" and can influence almost any opinion of the public.

It was broadcast live October 30, 1938, over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. The format was a simulated live newscast of developing events. It tricked some of its listeners into believing that a Martian invasion was actually taking place, causing panic among listeners.
