SCF was established by a group of young people rejecting mainstream culture and looking for something else on 1971. They were resisting the Vietnam war and general mindless consumer conformity, while promoting issues like civil rights, gay liberation and environmental consciousness.
Today, SCF is entering a new chapter as long-term art project shaped by many hands, a sort of queer commune-farm-homestead-sanctuary-school hybrid.
Inspirations and lessons for me:
Various events to share items or ideas
"Join us for an afternoon of locally crafted snacks, queer-, trans- and feminist- farmer films, and sustainable living skillsharing for North Coast LGBTQ folks and friends.
This is a free event. And we invite you to bring any fresh produce, seeds or starts from your gardens to share."
For my utopia, I thought it would be a good idea to get older people as well as younger people to collaborate on artworks and place them as decorations in the community, with regular activities to change the decorations, and to do a holiday theme.
Selling peripheral products online
SCF Seed Mix
A crazy cacophonous seed mix including thirty varieties of greens, grains, flowers, edible cultivars, and native wildflowers collected by hand at SCF.
Our Plant Community: A Salmon Creek Farm Collaborative Field Guide
Drawings, descriptions, and stories of sixty florae found on the land by twenty friends of Salmon Creek Farm. They took the time to meet the plants one by one; to find out their stories, record what we saw, and are sharing what they found with audiences through these pages.
For my utopia, I can not only sell to the neighbourhood, but can also sell its products online (young people can be involved in designing the products, setting up a website or online shop and selling them).
