CASE STUDY - Geku-Haus

In 2015, Geku-Haus, located in Essen, Germany, was established as a novel co-living community, trying to bring youth and silver-haired people to live together. The first floor of Geku-Haus is a café and a flea market, the second to fifth floors are apartments, the sixth floor provides offices for young people, and the seventh floor is a saloon for the elderly and young people to interact. The silver-haired residents of Geku-Haus are diverse and have a strong artistic and cultural atmosphere. The elderly and young people often eat and share life together.

My reflection:

Some people believes that age-divisional communities have deepened the generational antagonism. Young people regard wealthy elders as predators of social resources; elders live in closed environments, feeling lonely and abandoned by their children. He pointed out that in a community suitable for mature age people, in the future, the composition of households should be dominated by mixed age groups, so that young people and the elderly can support each other.

Therefore, participation of all ages should be a better way than exclusive to old age.
