Adler maintained that human psychology is psychodynamic in nature. It is not the 'experience itself' that determines the self, but the 'meaning given to the experience'. Adler advocates not being stuck in the past, but using it to move into the future.
So I needed to leave behind those upsetting memories of the past and try to start afresh. I used the concept of incineration.
Installation
The right half of the installation will be hung with my letters, which will be connected by cotton thread. The left half will be a mirror to read the mirrored words, as described in the previous visual experiments, as a kind of self-analysis. The mirror will also be tied with cotton thread, symbolising the bondage to oneself (cf. the visual experiment in the research narratives). When I start burning from the incineration point, starting with the letter and ending with the threads that bind the mirror, the paper letter will burn away with the cotton threads. This process should require a video to demonstrate, and it is not possible to perform a dangerous incineration while on display.
Plan for the show
I plan to put this installation at the graduate show so that the audience can participate in writing invisible letters and hang them from it.
Then I want the video to be in the middle of the mirror and people can see themselves while watching my video.
As well I will be looking for meaningful lines from the book to make some cards and print out for the audience to take away.
