I think the thread is a very interesting element, it can be made of many different materials and forms, it can be bent at will, or it can be made up of many threads to form a surface. It can also represent many images, for example when it connects two objects it represents connection, when it binds something it represents bondage, when it is a jumble of threads wrapped together it represents chaos, etc.
Wire sculpture/ drawings by Polish born Australian artist Barbara Licha.
These figures are very much trapped and caged, they seem to be dancing their frustrations out before us. They are pulled by the thread and looks difficult to get out of control.
Connections, Nikola Emma Ryšavá, Mixed media, 2017
In this work, the two characters are bound together by many and varied threads, and the two appear to be very much and closely connected. Although they still keep their distance from each other.
UNRAVEL, Silk, linen, bamboo, copper, and stainless steel threads; oil on wood panels, 2019
UNRAVEL is about how we often have to take things apart to put them back together.
In knitting, unraveling is about correcting an error, or starting over. There is a vulnerability in letting things fall apart, and a revelation in seeing the new forms reassembled. Our experiences are so interconnected and overlaid that sometimes we only remember beginnings and endings, leaving the middles feeling hazy like clouds.
